How children keep you in the present moment

Whether you have children yourself or you’re borrowing them from time to time, one thing I have noticed is that they keep you present.

With my younger daughter cleaning up the yard is fun. We’re collecting leaves, pine cones and needles. My 2-year old looks at the pinecones, touches them, feels them with her hand and then slowly drops them in the basket. To observe her delicate movement through the yard is like watching a moving meditation. I become calm, enjoy my time outside with her and feel relaxed. I am present.

With my 9 year old son I admire his focus when he’s carving a pumpkin. He stays present with his creative project, picks out a design and does not stop until he’s done. I see him breathe, smile and exited about the finished product and how it will look with a glowing candle inside when dark. I enjoy observing an ordinary pumpkin turn into a piece of art. I breathe and feel the calmness of the creative energy come over me. I am present.

Me, as an adult, I meditate every day to feel calmness inside and live in the moment. I follow my breath, notice the airflow and relax. It’s blissful and peaceful. I am present.

With a daily mindfulness practice you too can see how you can connect to yourself  each day… and notice the resistance to becoming the best you, where all is possible and everything is in the flow. Try it….it’s free, it just takes commitment…. not always easy but definitely possible.

Namaste,

    Dear Ditteke,

Your latest blog entry, How children keep you in the present moment, is wonderful and, again, should be shared in a newspaper column. I know the retired editor at the Sentinel so when you are ready for a weekly entry I can help perhaps.

I think, often, during the day of your claiming the “Moment” by watching you little ones romp.

    Regards,

    Ron MacLachlan
